Moscow, Russia (CNN) -- Russia signed a deal with Libya to provide nearly $2 billion in arms to the North African nation, Russian state media reported Saturday.

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin announced the contract with Libya on Saturday, news agency RIA Novosti reported.

The agency did not have specifics of the 1.3 billion euro ($1.8 billion) deal inked Friday, but reported that Putin said it was "not only for small arms and light weapons."

Rosoboronexport, Russia's government-run arms export agency, previously said it had five military contracts with Libya that included "military equipment for its ground forces and the navy, the modernization of T-72 tanks and spare parts supplies," RIA Novosti reported.

World Peace:

Our expressions of love and compassion create a world at peace. With every loving thought we hold, every kind word we express, we contribute to a world at peace. Each of us has the power to love and the ability to be patient and forgiving, no matter what is happening. Even in the appearance of turmoil and trouble, we can affirm: Peace, be still.

We can still troubled waters with the power of our love. As we go about our day, we express compassion wherever possible.

As we pray, we see the divine good in our loved ones and we inspire others. Centered in the divine nature of our being and the oneness that we are, we are powerful. Our smallest acts combine with the actions of others to create a world at peace, a world that works for all.

I'm not buying it SamRam! Those are just words. Most of the world lives in war, abject poverty, or some for of degrading servitude. Our war in Iraq has caused suffering few in American can possibly imagine, and as we dress our kids in shirts with peace symbols, and go to church today and listen to messages of hope, close to none of use will devote even second of empathy or concern to the unimaginable horror that is Iraq. We will delude ourselves with thoughts that it was somehow a necessary part of some obscure war on terror, and go on happily ignoring reality thanks to the images that American newspapers do not print and American TV does not show. The world, for hundreds of millions of people, is a cold, dark, disease filled place of pain and horror. If you really want to fix it America needs to give money for foreign aid like other nations do. In terms of amount given per capita, or as a percentage of GNI we are near the bottom of the industrialized world. Yet, the impression the news media gives here is that we are at the top and other nations do very little. less

Guest You are all missing the real story here. The real story is the Russian/Libya alliance predicted in the Bible in Ezekiel 38-39. War is coming to Israel through the hands of Russia,Libya and many other countries soon just as God told us it would.

Guest Whoever takes the bible this literally has some serious issues. Get with the real world, this isn't some biblical fanatasy that will play out just as the book tells it. Your biblical prediction is nothing more than religious fanatacism.

Nothing unusual here, rogue regimes are Russia, France and Germany's preferred export markets because they don't have to compete with Anglo companies there and their systematic opposition to the US gives them preferred partner status among the bad guys.

There is, however, something profoundly unfair in that all three countries are also allowed to compete for deals in Iraq despite siding with Saddam against the coalition. The US should force them to choose a side and accept the consequences. Either deal with rogue regimes and back out of regions where you fought against human rights or abstain from dealing with enemies of democracy. less

torvill Forget Libya - it's under no threat. Russia needs to deliver that S300 air defense system to Iran pronto. Only way of deterring further Israeli aggression and provoking more anti West terrorism. That neocon lunatic Blair at the Iraq inquiry yesterday showed the importance.

In the 1982 Lebanon war, The Israeli military handily defeated the T-72 with the first generation Merkava (they're on the 4th generation now). It is true that the main gun is much more destructive than most modern tanks, but the T-72 lacks the maneuverability and evasion capabilities of most tanks produced since the late 1970s.

It is no secret that Russia would like to diminish the US' international status, as do China, Iran, Venezuela and a number of others, and supplying military equipment is just way of doing that. The bottom line, though, is that Russian equipment is cheaper and less complicated, thus it can be purchased in larger quantities and maintained by a semi-skilled workforce. American equipment is generally more complicated and expensive, and its use is severely limited by Foreign Military Sales legislation. For the most part, for the average nation, buying Russian is easier and better value for money...more bang for the buck. less
